Meet the Team at Pup Prodigy

Lucas Friel

Lucas’ journey into dog training started with his own dog, Zeek. What began as a search for a bit of help quickly turned into a genuine passion, as he realised how much he enjoyed learning about dog behaviour and communication. With the support of a skilled mentor, Lucas spent years working on Zeek’s training and building a solid foundation in obedience and handling.

Recognising his interest and potential, Lucas was invited to continue learning under his mentor, which marked the start of his professional career. Since then, he’s worked hands-on with dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments—gaining years of practical experience and learning how to tailor his approach to suit each individual dog.

Over the years, Lucas has taught everything from structured group classes to personalised one-on-one sessions, helping both pet owners and working dog handlers build better relationships with their dogs through clear communication and training.

Along the way, he was introduced to decoy work and the sport of Protection Sports Association (PSA). He quickly found a love for the structure, challenge, and teamwork involved and has since been training in the sport while preparing to compete with his young Belgian Malinois.

After relocating from the Sunshine Coast to Jimboomba, Lucas decided to start his own training business with the goal of helping others better understand and connect with their dogs. He brings a calm, patient approach to every session and believes that good training is about working with the dog in front of you—whether it’s a playful puppy, a family pet, or a high-drive working dog.

Beth Rankin

Beth’s passion for dog training began with her Dachshund and quickly grew into a lifelong commitment to understanding and working with dogs of all breeds, temperaments, and drives. From a young age, she volunteered as a kennel hand at AWLQ and spent years fostering dogs—from tiny puppies to senior sweethearts—helping each one build confidence in people and the world around them.

Her journey took a more technical turn when she began exploring scent detection and mantrailing with her German Shepherd. These experiences taught her to read subtle canine cues and appreciate just how intelligent and capable dogs truly are. That foundation led to a mentorship with a trainer who develops working dogs for corrections and security. Through this, Beth gained hands-on experience in high-level obedience, bitework, and working with high-drive dogs—regularly handling and helping shape their development.

She’s also played an important role in raising young puppies through their critical periods, focusing on environmental exposure and early socialisation to prepare them for complex working roles.

Today, Beth competes in the sport of PSA (Protection Sports Association) with her Belgian Malinois, Kato. Together, they’ve earned their PDC and PSA1 titles—taking out multiple podium finishes. Dog sports have shown Beth just how vital trust is between a dog and their person. That bond, built through consistency, respect, and communication, is what drives her passion and continues to shape her approach to training every day.
